SENIOR NUMERICAL MODELLING ENGINEER

The Role

The Senior Numerical Modelling Engineer will work within the Research and Development department continuing work on the development of existing numerical models of the Oyster device, as well as leading the establishment of new numeric models and techniques.  

Key Result Areas

The Numerical Modelling Engineer will be required to respond to and lead a wide variety of analytical, practical and technical challenges that regularly require an innovative approach and areas of particular focus include:

• Data handling and processing of full scale Oyster 1 data for calibration of existing models and tank tests
• Analysis and calibration of wave climate and ADCP data at the EMEC site in conjunction with the resource assessment team
• Spectral and wave analysis of same to inform any changes required for tanks test seas or resource models
• Develop existing numerical models further using tank and full scale information and investigate performance improvements and design modifications    
• Work with tanks test team to establish relevant experiments and data acquisition
• Establish new modelling techniques focused on examining the physical process governing the Oyster device
• Lead either in house or outsourced CFD work as required
• Establish and run new research collaborations with universities in the area of numerical modelling
• Contribute to any APL academic publications as appropriate    

Competence

• Good honours degree in Engineering / Mathematics / Physics or a related subject
• PhD in Applied Physics / Mathematics / Mechanics or related engineering discipline
• Minimum 3 years post graduation experience in numerical modelling
• Strong preference for experience in the marine environment and wave energy
• Track record of scientific accomplishments, including publication record, and research excellence in area of numerical modelling
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to think independently and attention to detail
• Thrives in a challenging, innovative and fast paced environment
• Achievement orientated and solutions driven
• Good communication and interpersonal skills

Salary is dependent on experience.  This role is based in Edinburgh and may involve travel.
