STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

The Role

The Structural Engineer will oversee all structural engineering aspects of the current and future projects.  Ultimately leading a team of structural engineers and sub-contractors who will take the Wave Energy Conversion projects from proven concept to fully developed commercial products. The Structural Engineer will assist the Engineering Manager in the creation and consolidation of intellectual property within the company and to manage the delivery of wave energy projects for our customers from concept to completion. 

Profile

The Structural Engineer will have the following skills, knowledge and experience:

• Chartered engineer in a Civil / Structural discipline
• Design and operational experience in marine engineering and/or sub-sea projects essential;
• Project management of design and construction projects, preferably in the marine, subsea or renewable energy sector;
• Degree qualified or equivalent (MSc, PhD or MBA of additional interest)
• Working knowledge of operating safely within a marine environment.
• Good presentation skills and ability to drive meetings
• Thorough understanding of the design principles of structural engineering
• Thorough understanding of legislative requirements.
• Familiar with the software used for structural engineering design.
• Good range of  IT skills
• The ability to juggle conflicting priorities.
• Experience of planning and managing manpower and responsibility for diverse technology solutions.
• Experience of project management

Planning and problem-solving tasks

• To ensure Health and Safety is paramount in all aspects of design and development work
• To obtain and maintain an overall understanding of the  technologies and related technical issues and provide advice to the Engineering Manager in relation to all Structural engineering technical matters;
• To be experienced in solving  complex problems and innovative in the solutions
• To manage and co-ordinate the Structural design process and develop robust systems for making key technical decisions and managing information flow;
• To obtain and maintain an overall understanding of the commercial and economic issues relating to the development of the technologies and manage the relationship between technical and economic factors to produce optimum results;
• To be willing and able to function as a professional engineer when required designing and implementing cost-effective equipment modifications to help improve safety, reliability and throughput;
• To support the Engineering manager and team in the overall objective of driving down the cost of power.
• The Structural Engineer will identify the need for structural engineering resource, and should subsequently take on team management responsibilities in relation to the resource available to each project.
• To produce and implement a comprehensive plan for the technical development of the technology
• To assist the Engineering Manager in determining and procuring the staff, sub-contractors, facilities and other resources required to implement the development plan;
• To implement robust project management, quality and document control systems which should be ISO9000 compliant;
• Work with the other discipline team members and Project Managers to estimate effort, plan activities and negotiate consensus among individual team members on their appointed tasks.
• Identify work to be contracted out and manage the contracting out process effectively. 

Technical and quality tasks

• The Structural Engineer must have an understanding of relevant methodologies, processes and standards 
• The Structural Engineer is responsible for the quality and the structural integrity of the design deliverables – also referred to as fitness for purpose or specification level, and may need to call on specialists to assist in creating or assessing quality standards.
 developing a project specification with colleagues, often including those from other engineering disciplines;
• To develop, test and evaluate theoretical designs;
• To discuss and solve complex problems with sub-contractors, suppliers and customers;
• To make sure that the structure can be made again reliably and that it will perform consistently in specified operating environments; 
• To produce details of specifications and outline designs;
• To recommend modifications in the light of prototype test results;
• To use research, analytical, conceptual and planning skills, particularly mathematical modelling and computer-aided design;
• To consider the implications of issues such as cost, safety and time constraints;
• monitoring and commissioning plant and systems

Salary is dependent on experience.
