Development Milestones

Aquamarine has achieved several important milestones in the development of Oyster®. Our development programme is scheduled to deliver several commercial wave farms.

Milestone 1 (2006)

Concept development work completed, including wave tank tests at Queen’s University Belfast using 1/40th and 1/20th scale models of a single oscillator. Numerical modelling and performance and load test results were used to deliver the baseline design and operational loads for the Oyster® pilot plant.

Milestone 2 (2007–2008)

Oyster® has been fully fabricated and tested. The full system has been fully insured and certified by independent third parties; and is ready for installation at EMEC in Orkney.

Milestone 3 (2007-2008)

Theoretical research: numerical modelling has been carried out to identify optimal array configurations and predict performance of the first Oyster® wave farm.

Work to deliver cost-effective production designs is now underway. This is based on experimental research, value engineering and detailed array design: the performance of the Oyster® technology is being verified via tank testing.

Milestone 4 (2009–2011)

The Oyster® array demonstration project as a precursor to commercial deployment.  The fabrication design will be finalised and contracts placed for the fabrication of a demonstration array to be deployed in Scotland.  This will be the first step in deployment of further commercial Oyster® wave farms across Europe.

1/40th and 1/20th scale models of Oyster® have been tested at Queen's University Belfast.

Advanced sector-carrier wave paddles were used in the Queen's University wave tank to generate realistic sea-states during scale model testing.

Aquamarine has secured a test berth for the full-scale Oyster® prototype to be piloted at EMEC, in Orkney.
