Chairman, Mervyn Jones

Mervyn has spent much of his career in the oil industry both in the UK and abroad, holding a number of trading, commercial and business restructuring roles with BP. Among his broader responsilibilities he has also been Chairman of the Grangemouth Development Group, Vice President of a Chamber of Commerce and a LEC Board Member. Since 2003 he has set up the Maple Jones Consultancy, has been a Council Member of the Scottish Funding Council for Further and Higher Education, there chairing its Strategic Funds and Knowledge Transfer and Innovation Groups, and is Chairman of Falkirk Community Stadium Limited.

Non-Executive Director, Allan Thomson

Company founder, Allan is a successful technology development entrepreneur responsible for founding several companies in the offshore construction and wave power sectors. Allan has been a leading developer of wave power technology in the UK. He has been responsible for identifying and testing wave power concepts and overseeing the development and sea testing of several devices over the last 20 years. Allan is a fellow of the World Technology Network and was a founder member of the UK Energy Ministerial Renewable Advisory Board.

Non-Executive Director, Frederik W. Mowinckel

Frederik joined Aquamarine Power as a non-executive director in May 2007. For the last 20 years, he has served as CEO, director and chairman with several companies, delivering successful business development, investment and management strategies for them in 45 different countries. He has led several turnarounds of global manufacturing and trading companies such as Hunton Fiber AS, TNC International (Asia) Ltd., Rikett Technology AS and Solar Integrated Technologies, Inc.  He is currently the Chairman of Bergensis Capital AS, a Bergen, Norway based investment company with holdings in various listed and unlisted companies in clean technology including renewable energy. Frederik holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island.

Non-Executive Director, Tristan Fischer

Tristan Fischer was CEO of Camco International, the award winning carbon developer listed on AIM with one of the largest carbon portfolios in the world.  He has a track record in the global renewable energy sector, having previously worked as a project developer for Shell WindEnergy. He also led the establishment of new businesses in the wave and solar sectors for Shell Renewables and Shell Technology Ventures. He has widespread geographical experience in regions including Eastern Europe, South America and Asia, and has led a number of early-stage companies. He began his career with Citigroup project finance, developing power and infrastructure projects. Tristan has an MA (Hons) from Cambridge University.

Non-Executive Director, John Thouless

John was Scottish and Southern Energy’s (SSE) project manager for the Neptune Device. As well as sitting on the Board, he has been seconded by SSE to work with Aquamarine Power. John worked on a wide range of electricity generation and infrastructure projects before joining the utility sector, initially with Scottish Power. Since joining SSE in 1996 he has developed combined heat and power projects for the industrial and commercial markets; and managed the development and construction of a £4.5m novel power project utilising gas from an abandoned coalmine. He has been involved in renewable energy for over 5 years, managing the development of some of SSE’s wind farms including the 120MW/52 turbine Hadyard Hill (the UK’s largest wind farm when consented).  John is a Chartered Engineer with an MSc in Power Engineering and Management and trained as a power engineer before pursuing a career in the commercial development of power projects.

Non-Executive Director, Jim Smith

Appointed in 2007 following Scottish and Southern Energy's investment in the company, Jim is Director of Major Projects at SSE, a post he has held since 2004.  He has responsibility for the delivery of all SSE's large scale capital infrastructure projects across the group, such as the Glendoe Hydro Station, Aldbrough Gas Storage Facility and the Beauly-Denny 400kV Transmission Project.  He has worked with the Company for 20 years in a range of roles covering projects, engineering and operations, principally within power generation.  Prior to that he worked as a design engineer in the automotive industry.  Jim is also a director of Barking Power Ltd which owns a 1000MW CCGT station.  He has a B.Sc(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from Strathclyde University.

Specialist Advisor to the Board, Professor Trevor Whittaker

Trevor is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Professor of Coastal Engineering at Queen's University Belfast. He has been a pioneer of wave power engineering since the early 1970s, when he first worked with Professor Allan Wells on the design and delivery of the first Wells Turbines. In the 1990s he managed the team which designed, constructed and operated Britain's first wave power station, located on the Isle of Islay. It became one of only four grid-connected wave power stations in the world. Since then Trevor has been involved in the design and deployment of six wave power devcies.
