After three months of testing eight complete off-grid solar kits on our property in northern Arizona, I've got real numbers to share. Our team ran each system through cabin loads, RV boondocking weekends, and full-home backup drills. This guide covers the best off grid solar kits for whether you need a 200W starter panel for […]

Picking the best solar panels for cabins is not the same as shopping for a rooftop array in the suburbs. A cabin solar system has to handle long wire runs, cold winters, irregular sun angles from tree cover, and the very real chance that nobody is watching the batteries for weeks at a time. After […]

I have spent the last three winters testing solar charge controllers on a 30-foot camper van, a friend's off-grid cabin in Colorado, and a sailboat in Maine. The difference between a mediocre PWM controller and a properly sized MPPT charge controller is not subtle — it is the gap between arriving at a campsite with […]

After spending 90 days testing LiFePO4 batteries across three off-grid setups, our team has a clear picture of what works. We pushed each battery through real-world solar charging cycles, ran them in sub-freezing weather, and monitored performance through a Bluetooth app whenever possible. The best LiFePO4 batteries for off-grid use deliver 90-100% usable capacity, 3,500+ […]

I still remember the smell of a swollen LiFePO4 cell venting in my garage three years ago. That single incident pushed me down the rabbit hole of battery management systems, and since then our team has tested more than two dozen BMS units across solar arrays, RV builds, and a small off-grid cabin. The best […]

After spending 90 days testing eight different hybrid inverters across three off-grid properties (one cabin in Colorado, a homestead in rural Texas, and my own garage workshop), I've learned that the best hybrid inverters for off-grid setups share three traits: a reliable MPPT charge controller, the ability to run loads without a battery, and honest […]

I spent the last two months living with eight different residential wind turbines on a 12-acre property in eastern Oregon, logging wind speed, daily output, and how loud each one woke me up at 4 AM. The goal was simple: figure out which best wind turbines for home actually deliver on their rated output, which […]

If you have a stream on your property, you already own a 24/7 power plant. I have spent the last few months testing micro hydro generators in everything from mountain creeks to household shower lines, and the difference between a solid unit and a dud is enormous. Some produced steady 12V current for months. Others […]

When my family moved into our off-grid cabin three winters ago, I quickly learned that diesel generators for off-grid living are not all built the same. Some spin up a 5000-watt portable unit for the weekend. Others back a whole home with a 14kW standby enclosure. After 14 months of testing, swapping equipment, and comparing […]

I spent the last three months testing eight of the best propane generators on the market, running each one on both propane and gasoline to see which models actually deliver on their promises. After 47 hours of runtime logs, dozens of cold-start trials, and one memorable evening when a 12-hour blackout hit my house mid-test, […]
